Tart Cherry Extract

Evidence: moderate_human

Mechanism of Action

Tart cherry (Prunus cerasus) is rich in anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-rutinoside) and proanthocyanidins that inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes (comparable to ibuprofen in in vitro studies), suppress NF-kB-mediated inflammatory signaling, and scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Tart cherry also contains natural melatonin (13.5 ng/g) and tryptophan, supporting sleep quality. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects reduce exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) markers (CRP, IL-6, creatine kinase) and accelerate recovery of muscle function post-exercise.

Dosing Protocol

Standard: 480-960mg tart cherry extract daily or 8-12 oz tart cherry juice concentrate

Loading: 960mg/day (or 2x 8oz juice) starting 4-5 days before intense competition/event

Maintenance: 480mg/day

Administration: oral

Timing: Split AM/PM. Begin 4-5 days before anticipated intense training or competition for maximal protective effect. Continue 2-3 days after.

Duration: Event-based (4-7 day windows around intense training) or ongoing at lower dose

Notes

Evidence supports tart cherry as a natural alternative to NSAIDs for exercise-induced inflammation — with the advantage of not impairing muscular adaptation (NSAIDs may blunt muscle protein synthesis at high doses). The melatonin content supports the dual benefit of recovery and sleep quality. The debate about whether antioxidant supplementation blunts training adaptations is relevant here — some practitioners recommend using tart cherry around competitions but not during adaptation phases. Extract form preferred over juice for clients managing carbohydrate intake.

Stacking

  • Omega-3
  • Curcumin
  • Electrolytes
  • Magnesium

Interactions

  • NSAIDs [LOW] — Additive COX inhibition — may be redundant or synergistic; consider replacing NSAIDs with tart cherry for recovery
  • Warfarin [LOW] — Vitamin K content in some tart cherry products

Contraindications

  • None significant. Diabetics should consider sugar content of juice form.

Side Effects

  • GI discomfort at high juice volumes
  • Potential blood sugar impact (juice form — extract has minimal sugar)
  • Staining of teeth/clothing from juice

Source Quality

Montmorency tart cherry (Prunus cerasus) is the most-studied cultivar. CherryPURE (concentrated powder) is standardized and used in clinical trials. Juice concentrate (CherryActive, Cheribundi) provides whole-food anthocyanins but with added sugar. Extract capsules offer precise dosing without sugar.
