Shilajit

Evidence: moderate_human

Mechanism of Action

Shilajit is a mineral-rich exudate containing fulvic acid (60-80%), dibenzo-alpha-pyrones (DBPs), and over 85 minerals in ionic form. Fulvic acid acts as an electron shuttle in mitochondrial electron transport, enhancing CoQ10 function and ATP production. DBPs protect CoQ10 from oxidation, extending its functional half-life. Shilajit increases total and free testosterone by stimulating steroidogenesis and reducing SHBG. It also enhances mitochondrial membrane potential, acts as a potent antioxidant (fulvic acid neutralizes free radicals), and improves mineral absorption by forming bioavailable fulvic acid-mineral complexes.

Dosing Protocol

Standard: 250-500mg purified shilajit daily (standardized to >50% fulvic acid)

Maintenance: 250mg/day

Administration: oralsublingual

Timing: Morning with warm water or milk (traditional Ayurvedic method). Can be split AM/PM.

Duration: Cycle 8-12 weeks on, 2-4 weeks off

Notes

Purification is CRITICAL — raw shilajit from markets can contain lead, arsenic, and mercury. Only use lab-verified, purified forms. The CoQ10 synergy is the most interesting mechanism — shilajit + CoQ10 may be more effective than either alone for mitochondrial energy. Testosterone-raising evidence exists in infertile men. Traditional Ayurvedic use spans thousands of years. Fulvic acid content is the key quality metric. Resin form (dissolved in warm water) is traditional; capsules are more convenient.

Source Quality

PrimaVie (Natreon) is the clinically studied, purified form standardized to >50% fulvic acid with heavy metal testing. Unprocessed/raw shilajit from unknown sources can contain dangerous levels of heavy metals, mycotoxins, and free radicals. NEVER use unprocessed shilajit. Brands: Nootropics Depot (PrimaVie), Jarrow Shilajit Fulvic Complex, Pure Himalayan Shilajit (if lab-tested).
