Serrapeptase

Evidence: moderate_human

Mechanism of Action

Serrapeptase (serratiopeptidase) is a proteolytic enzyme originally isolated from the gut of the silkworm (Serratia marcescens). It hydrolyzes non-living tissue including fibrin, blood clots, cysts, and arterial plaque while sparing living tissue. It reduces bradykinin and other pain-mediating amines, provides anti-inflammatory effects by reducing neutrophil infiltration, and thins mucus by cleaving glycoprotein structures. It may also enhance antibiotic penetration into biofilms.

Dosing Protocol

Standard: 120,000-240,000 SPU (serratiopeptidase units) daily

Loading: 240,000 SPU/day for acute inflammation (2 weeks)

Maintenance: 120,000 SPU/day

Administration: oral

Timing: On empty stomach (critical — food proteins will be digested instead of systemic absorption). 30+ minutes before meals or 2 hours after.

Duration: Cycle 4-8 weeks on, 2-4 weeks off

Notes

Empty stomach dosing is non-negotiable — this is the most common user error. European clinical use primarily for post-surgical inflammation, sinusitis, and carpal tunnel. Often combined with nattokinase in 'fibrinolytic enzyme' protocols. The biofilm-disruption property is emerging as a tool for chronic infections. SPU measurement is the only relevant dosing metric.

Source Quality

Enteric coating is mandatory to protect from gastric acid degradation. Activity measured in SPU (serratiopeptidase units), not mg. Brands: Doctor's Best (high potency), Arthur Andrew Medical (Serretia). Ensure acid-resistant DRcaps or enteric-coated.
