Digestive Enzymes (Broad Spectrum)

Evidence: strong_human

Mechanism of Action

Broad-spectrum digestive enzyme complexes supplement endogenous pancreatic and brush border enzyme production. Key enzymes include: lipase (triglyceride hydrolysis to fatty acids/glycerol), protease/peptidase (protein to amino acids via peptide bond cleavage), amylase (starch to maltose/glucose), lactase (lactose to glucose/galactose), cellulase (plant fiber breakdown), and invertase (sucrose hydrolysis). They reduce osmotic load in the small intestine, decrease bacterial fermentation of undigested substrate, and improve nutrient bioavailability.

Dosing Protocol

Standard: 1-2 capsules with each main meal

Maintenance: 1 capsule per meal

Administration: oral

Timing: Immediately before or at the start of each meal. Not needed for small snacks.

Duration: ongoing as needed

Notes

Not a replacement for identifying and addressing root causes of maldigestion (low stomach acid, SIBO, pancreatic insufficiency, bile acid deficiency). Betaine HCl may be needed in addition for low stomach acid. Some clients become psychologically dependent — reassess periodically. Enzyme potency measured in activity units (FCC/USP), not milligrams — this is a critical quality differentiator.

Stacking

  • Probiotics
  • Betaine HCl
  • Ox Bile (for fat malabsorption)
  • Ginger

Interactions

  • Acarbose/Miglitol (alpha-glucosidase inhibitors) [MEDIUM] — Digestive enzymes with amylase counteract the mechanism of these diabetes drugs
  • Warfarin [LOW] — Bromelain/papain in some formulas may have mild anticoagulant properties

Contraindications

  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Known allergy to enzyme sources (porcine, fungal, fruit-derived)

Side Effects

  • GI cramping if taken without food
  • Allergic reactions (rare)
  • Mouth ulcers from chewing enzyme capsules
  • Perianal irritation from lipase at very high doses

Source Quality

Fungal/plant-derived enzymes (Aspergillus-based) have broader pH activity range than porcine pancreatin. Look for formulas listing activity in USP or FCC units, not just mg. DPP-IV enzyme included for gluten/casein sensitivity. Brands: Pure Encapsulations Digestive Enzymes Ultra, Enzymedica Digest Gold, Thorne Bio-Gest.
