Cordyceps Militaris

Evidence: moderate_human

Mechanism of Action

Cordyceps contains cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) and adenosine, which modulate purinergic signaling. Cordycepin activates AMPK, inhibits mTOR, and modulates adenosine receptors (A1, A2A, A3). It enhances cellular ATP production by upregulating mitochondrial biogenesis genes and improving oxygen utilization efficiency. Cordyceps increases EPO production (erythropoietin) via HIF-1alpha stabilization, enhancing oxygen-carrying capacity. Beta-glucans (1,3/1,6) activate innate immune cells via Dectin-1 and complement receptor 3 (CR3). It also relaxes bronchial smooth muscle and enhances adrenal hormone production.

Dosing Protocol

Standard: 1000-3000mg daily (fruiting body extract) or 500-1000mg (concentrated 10:1 extract)

Maintenance: 1000-2000mg/day

Administration: oral

Timing: Morning or pre-workout (energizing). Avoid evening dosing.

Duration: Cycle 8-12 weeks on, 2 weeks off, or continuous

Notes

The fruiting body vs mycelium on grain debate is critical: fruiting body contains the therapeutic compounds; mycelium on grain products (like Host Defense) contain significant grain starch and lower bioactive content. C. militaris is now the standard species — C. sinensis is rare, expensive, and often counterfeit. Athletic performance benefits are best demonstrated with chronic (3+ week) supplementation, not acute dosing. The adenosine content may explain the smooth, non-jittery energy effect distinct from caffeine.

Stacking

  • Rhodiola
  • Beta-Alanine
  • Beetroot Powder
  • CoQ10

Interactions

  • Anticoagulants [MEDIUM] — Cordyceps has mild antiplatelet activity
  • Immunosuppressants [MEDIUM] — Beta-glucans are immunostimulatory — may oppose immunosuppressive therapy
  • Diabetes medications [LOW] — Mild hypoglycemic effect

Contraindications

  • Autoimmune conditions (immunostimulatory)
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Pre-surgery (discontinue 2 weeks prior)

Side Effects

  • Mild GI upset
  • Dry mouth
  • Insomnia if taken late
  • Rare: nausea
  • Rare: allergic reaction in mold-sensitive individuals

Source Quality

Cordyceps militaris (cultivated fruiting body) is the available and affordable species — true Cordyceps sinensis (caterpillar fungus) is prohibitively expensive and cannot be cultivated. Ensure product is fruiting body extract (not mycelium on grain, which is mostly starch). Standardized to cordycepin and adenosine content. Beta-glucan content should be >25%. Brands: Real Mushrooms Cordyceps, Nootropics Depot (10:1 extract), Host Defense (mycelium — controversial).
