CoQ10 functions as an essential electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain (Complex I to III and Complex II to III), directly supporting oxidative phosphorylation and ATP synthesis. In its reduced form (ubiquinol), it serves as a potent lipid-soluble antioxidant, protecting mitochondrial membranes and LDL particles from peroxidation. It also modulates the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) and supports endothelial NO synthase coupling.
Standard: 100-200mg ubiquinol daily
Loading: 300-400mg/day for 4 weeks (especially post-statin initiation)
Maintenance: 100-200mg/day
Administration: oral
Timing: With meals containing fat. Morning or midday preferred (may be mildly energizing).
Duration: ongoing
Ubiquinol is the reduced, bioactive form. Conversion from ubiquinone declines with age. Statin users are a mandatory supplementation population. Blood levels can be tested; target >2.5 mcg/mL. Synergistic with PQQ for mitochondrial biogenesis.
Ubiquinol (reduced form, Kaneka QH) preferred over ubiquinone for bioavailability, especially in individuals over 40. Softgel in oil base. Avoid powder-filled capsules. Brands: Jarrow QH-Absorb, Life Extension Super Ubiquinol.
