Active triterpenoid saponins (bacosides A and B) provide multifaceted neuroprotection: inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and activation of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) to enhance cholinergic neurotransmission; upregulation of tryptophan hydroxylase and serotonin transporter expression to modulate serotonergic tone; antioxidant neuroprotection via induction of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase; and reduction of beta-amyloid aggregation.
