Glucosamine serves as a substrate for glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and proteoglycan biosynthesis in articular cartilage. It stimulates chondrocyte production of type II collagen and proteoglycans while inhibiting MMP-3 and aggrecanase enzymes that degrade cartilage matrix.
